Mark Francis
‘Echo 3’ in production at Atelier JI, 2020, Published by the Artist
Mark Francis is a Northern Irish painter known for his alla prima technique of blurring tones and forms to make photographic effects of glowing light. He studied Fine Art Painting at St Martins and Chelsea Schools of Art and continues to live in London. He creates contemporary abstract paintings based on scientific imagery. Francis’ work focuses on the abstract nature of microscopic images, including those of sperm, fungus, and astronomical formations. Through this imagery, the artist aims to explore ways in which science is impacted by mapping, order, and randomness.
Atelier JI collaborated with Francis in 2020 to create a series of 4 etching editions in preparation for his solo exhibition ‘Re:Sound’ at the Graphic Studio Gallery, Dublin.
